I wouldn’t make a good raconteur or entertainer. ![]() I’m not good at telling war stories or jokes. He suggested talking about any college and DU war stories I recall. He said they had no particular subject in mind. When Steve first spoke with me about tonight, I asked him what he and the others organizing the good time we’re having tonight would like me to talk about. If so, maybe my remarks will qualify as giving something back to Rutgers and DU. I hope my remarks will provoke you to think in new ways about serious issues of concern to all of us. And when Steve Yost contacted me to ask me to speak tonight, I was immediately receptive. So, the thought of “giving back” is an appealing one to me. Rutgers College, as it was then named, and the Delta Upsilon chapter at Rutgers, were good to me in important formative years of my life. There is no peace for the wicked, God says.Thank you for inviting me to speak this evening. It should fill us with grief that our sin personally offends God and disrupts our relationship with him. God promises to dwell with those who don’t come before him with pride but with a humility that admits we have fallen short and need his grace. Isaiah 57.14-21 reveals that we must do three things. So, what can we do to keep the peace, especially when we fall short of God’s standards and sin against Him? Among the many titles and attributes that God possesses, being a God who disciplines is certainly one that we must acknowledge. If we are not pursuing righteousness, we should not expect to experience peace or to be able to share it with others. Righteousness is not only the ‘status’ God has given us by faith in Jesus Christ (Christ’s righteousness has been imputed to us) but also the standard for our thoughts, words, and deeds God expects us to live righteously. In the Bible, there is a very close relationship between righteousness and peace.
